Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. It can lead to hospitalization and promote stroke, heart attack, chronic kidney disease. Drug treatments exist, but they do not work on all patients. That's why scientists are looking for effective alternatives.

In an article in The Lancet, researchers from Queen Mary University presented the results obtained with a new feature: an implant, the Coupler, which is inserted between the artery and vein of the thigh, and runs -circuite traffic. This arteriovenous anastomosis reduces mechanically blood pressure. The Coupler is produced by ROX Medical, which funded the work. The implant placement requires intervention of about 40 minutes under local anesthesia.
